Community Building Days

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!  It has been such a pleasure getting to know our new students and catching up with our friends that are returning.  We are excited to be a part of the Lower school and very happy to have Ms. Sperduto as our Unit Coordinator.  The students look forward to working with Ms. Roy and Ms. Harvell also.  On our first day of Community building, we were able to get to know  our peers by doing team building exercises.  Multiple activities helped us to recognize that we have to work together as a team to reach some goals.  Those activities helped us to recognize that we are all different, but necessary to complete some tasks.  The favorite appeared to be the “Toothpaste” endeavor.  The students were asked to think of a word to describe their group.  After choosing their word, they were asked to decorate their word on paper with toothpaste.  The students were then asked to use two popsicle sticks to put the toothpaste back into the container.  After two minutes of attempts, they were to give a recount of how that worked out.  Their observations were compared to the fact that words like the toothpaste are sometimes let out and not able to be taken back.  Our second Community building day was spent at Claytor Nature Center.  We had a fantastic time searching for critters in the water and observing the nature on a hike.  A hands on representation of food chains and webs was completed by all to kick off their exciting year in Life Science.  If the first two days are any indication of the entire year it should be AWESOME!
